The Barony of Eskalya is an SCA branch in the Principality of Oertha, Kingdom of the West. It consists geographically of the greater Anchorage area, from the Knik river in the north to the Kenai Peninsula in the south.
The Barony of Eskalya was founded as the Shire of Eskalya in the earliest mists of time in a place now called the Kingdom of An Tir. The earliest records of the Shire, those we now use to establish our legitimate claim to this land, date from A.S. XII. These ancient and venerable documents record a tournament held within the bounds of the shire to select a Lord-Defender, further these documents record that feasting and revelry marked the beginning of the rule of Sir Einrich Dwarflord Armpittsbane as the first Lord-Defender. Not one year later in A.S. XIII, Hugh McGlammoraga of the North and Selenia of Silverwood were invested as the Founding Baron and Baroness of Eskalya. The current Baron and Baroness, Breock of Whitby and Margaret Ann of Somerset are the eighth in that mighty line.
The name Eskalya is a bastardization of the Aleut word Aleyeska meaning the 'great land' or more accuratly, 'that big bit of ground over yonder'.
The Arms of the Barony are: Sable, in fess a mountain range argent, in chief a sun Or between two mullets argent and in base a sword fesswise reversed Or above a laurel wreath argent.
