The Royal Whim is a fairly common SCA tradition wherein the incoming King and/or Queen publicize a few idiosyncracies or eccentricities of theirs, so that the populace will be aware of them and able to act appropriately. Common whims are things like:

  • declaring a favorite food (chocolate is a common offender) to be period for the duration of the reign. (See also period by consensus)
  • declaring that some act or other (heraldic display for instance) is particularly pleasing and to be encouraged.
  • requesting that all of some particular class of persons perform some small or even trivial act.

When this done the whims are invariably small things and often humorous in tone.
