Portuguese is a Romance language from Portugal. Its earliest texts are dated from the 12th century with troubadours songs developing in the 13th century. The epic Os Lusíadas ("The Luciads") by Luís de Camões was published in 1572.

Modern Portuguese is based on a dialect from Lisbon, and influenced by the Galician dialect in north-west Spain.
