Fasting is the act of abstaining from certain foods or limiting of food intake. During the middle ages fasting was encouraged at various times of the year by the church. No animals were to be eaten on Fridays (however, fish are not considered animals in the Bible), restricted meals were prescribed for ember days and Lent prohibited meat, fish, eggs and milk.
