Elm (Genus Ulmus) is a tree producing a tough, split resistant wood making it excellent for wooden wheel hubs . This wood was valued for water pipes as it resists rotting when wet.

One variant, wych elm (Ulmus glabra) was frequently used for longbows although the prefered material was yew.

In Europe and partiularly England, Dutch Elm Disease killed most of all the then growing elm trees in the 1960's.
