12th Century camp food

• Venison pies - in a knights tents, freshly baked sitting on a bundle of rushes (on a table?), covered by a white cloth. They are of such a size that a very hungry lad can consume one and a half for lunch. Breaking open the pies is specifically mentioned, so we can assume the pies had a pastry lid.
