The Red Book of Hergest (Oxford, Jesus College, MS CXI = MS Welsh 1) or the Llyfr Coch Hergest, is one of the best known extant medieval Welsh manuscripts. Dating from somewhere around 1400 CE, the text comprises one of the sources for the Mabinogion.
The book also provided the fundamental inspiration for the Red Book of the Halflings in Lord of the Rings.
