Iceland is an island on the Arctic Circle in the North Atlantic ocean. Although several Celtic monks travelled to Iceland in the 9th century, the earliest permanent settlers were from Norway.
The early years of Icelandic settlement are recorded in many of the Icelandic sagas. In 930 Iceland established the Althing -- the oldest parliament in the world.
Icelanders were originally worshippers of Odin, Thor and Loki, but were converted to Christianity during the 10th and 11th centuries.
In 1262 Iceland became subject to the Norwegian crown, and then in the 14th century came to be ruled by Denmark.
