Russian is a Slavic language spoken throughout Russia. Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, which was created in the 10th century.

From the 9th to 11th centuries, Russian was still extremely close to other East Slavonic languages, but with the disintegration of Kievan Rus' these languages began to separate.
