A Province is an administrative unit used by some countries. In general, they are similar to counties in scope, but this may vary considerably. For a more thorough discussion of modern usage, please consult the wikipedia entry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Province

SCA Usage

A Province in the SCA is a group of the same size and with the same requirements as a Barony but which has no ceremonial head, such as a Baron or Baroness, the single exception being the Crown Province of Østgarðr, which is a province with a ceremonial head (or two), a Viceroy and/or Vicereine.
