some modern substitutes for period hose:
Over the knee socks, and thicker stockings can be fairly good matches. Remeber the hose have to look like they were cut from fine fabric, or in rarer cases, knitted, so some fine texture is good, coarse texture probably means you are dressing like a peasant.
Under boots, stirrup pants and similar are sometimes worn.
Unfortunately these items can sometimes be hard to find, even for women (let alone men) and not inexpensive. Over the knee socks do keep you nice and warm though.
