Geoffrey of Monmouth was a 12th century British historian. He is best known for his work Historia Regum Britanniae, which contains one of the earliest references to King Arthur.

He was born in Wales, near Monmouth at the end of the eleventh century. He eventually became a teaching canon at St.George's college at Oseney near Oxford, and later became bishop of St.Asaph's, in Flintshire, in 1152.
