Drinking can be a big part of recreationist events and in this the SCA and re-enactors are very similar. Many modern organisations that involve camping tends to be like this to some degree with rare (some would sat tedious) exceptions.
Drinking alcohol was a common practise during the Middle Ages partially because of the alcohol reducing the danger of drinking fluids potentially contaminated with germs.
