An artist is a person that attempts to create art. Not to be confused with a craftsman, the two terms are not exactly synonyms.

An artist aims to create a object of beauty, an object that communicates a feeling or sense of divinity, or other intangible emotions. In period, artists were required to be craftsmen, well-educated in the technical aspects of their craft. Only after a thorough training and understanding of the materials involved could a craftsman attempt to create art out of crude materials. So, in period, all artists were craftsman as well. What made them different is artists attempted to transcend the technical skills involved in their craaft and create something greater than the sum of its parts.

In modern times, being a craftsman is not considered a requirement to be an artist.
