This is the entry for alder from Maplet's A Greene Forest

Of the Alder tree.

The Alder tree (which by corrupt and accustomed kinde of speaking they commonly call the Elder) is of verie barraine and unfruitefull nature, as Theophrast witnesseth: this is his onelie best and the chiefest thing he hath, in that he groweth straight up in bodie, and is in his Wood and inward Marie very soft. His growth sayth he, is in moyst and watrie places, and else no where.
