nocabot A commander is, in SCA terms, anyone in authority over a number of troops and responsible for directing them on the battlefield. In period, any officer was likely to be noble, but in the SCA merit and experience is typically what decides one's command qualifications.

SCA commanders can be in charge of the logistics of getting their troops to the war and armoured-up for the battlefield, but mostly they merely command the troops on the field itself. Moving large formations of infantry in unison is a difficult task for any commander.

It is interesting that the title of Duke comes from the Latin Dux, which means, simply, commander.
