Man has a number of uses in the English language and in a medieval context.

Man (proper noun)

Refers to mankind or all of the human race.

Man (noun)

Male member of the genus Homo.

Man (verb)

To take a position. From this we get the modern words 'chairman' and 'barman'. Thus these words are unisex.

Man (noun)

A vassal to another.
