The abbreviation fl. stands for the Latin term "floruit" ("flourishing"). It is used to denote the time during which an artist created most of his or her works. It is particularly relevant to medieval artists (writers, composers, poets, scribes, etc) as we seldom know anything about them other than some of their creations.
