The backfield is analogous to being behind enemy lines. It is the part of the battle field behind the enemy's shield wall. In the SCA it's a happy place full of distracted people who aren't expecting to be attacked. It should, however, be noted that sometimes the back field is full of people waiting for someone to hit.
