In heraldry, the pale is an ordinary in the shape of a thick vertical line.
Traditionally (or pedantically) the pale is supposed to take up the middle third of the shield.
Its "baby cousin" is the pallet, about half as wide. It is relatively rare, however, and tends to come in 2s or 3s.

The Pale is the offical Midrealm newsletter for SCA members. The name "The Pale" is a reference to the arms of the Middle Kingdom: Argent, a pale gules, overall a dragon passant vert, in chief an ancient crown Or within a laurel wreath proper.
