Scotland is a country within the British Isles that shares a land border with England. The early inhabitants were the Picts. It became a single kingdom in the 9th century. It was invaded by the Romans (who were unsuccessful), the Irish and the Vikings (who settled in various areas), and the English (who became the new landlords). The first monarch of both England and Scotland was James VI (or James I of England).

The language and the word "Scot" come from the Irish immigrants.
