An alehouse was a drinking house that sold ale. The alehouse might be permanent, but a poorer establishment would open to get rid of excessive stocks of ale or to take advantage of any abundance in the raw materials of ale making.
Alehouses were considered places of low reputation and neither lodging nor food would be available.
