An ahlespiess is a weapon consisting of a shaft perhaps 3-4 feet long, topped by a long metal spike, often of square section. The ahlespiess had a rondel guard for the hands.
This is principly a thrusting weapon that is reputed to be able to penetrate some plate defences and would have likely been very effective against maille.
