In England, countesses are the wives of Earls.
Countess in the SCA
In the SCA, the title Countess is awarded to someone who has completed a reign over a kingdom. The honorific for a countess is "Your Excellency". After a second reign, they are awarded the title Duchess. A Countess is always a Lady of the Rose.
