The word Scimitar is used to describe any of a number of curved swords from Western Asia. It is derived from the Persian word shamshir, which refers to a thin bladed scimitar.
The Turkish kilij is the best known scimitar with its thick blade. It was used in the Ottoman Empire from the late 15th century.
