Generally, only items considered period are really accepted at SCA events. A few (really useful) items are considered to be "in period by consensus" due to the fact that their omission would make life much more difficult and less fun. Items like this include:
- duct tape
- coffee (for non eastern personas)
- cigarettes
- sunglasses
- cable ties
and many others.
In Ealdormere, several items, including chocolate and coffee have been declared legally period, a formal declaration that they are period by consensus.
