The Ordre de l'Étoile is a chivalric order, formed in 1351 by Jean II of France, evidently inspired by the English Order of the Garter. The knights of the order swore never to cede in battle, and as a result most of them died in the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. The order did not survive its founding king.

The motto of the order is thought to be Monstrant regibus astra viam, which translates as The star shows the way to kings.
