The first mention of Württemberg, which has been found to date, was in 1080. The Württemberg lands became prominent in 1268 when Conradin, the Duke of Swabia, died and many of the Swabian lands passed to the count of Württemberg. Württemberg became a duchy in 1495 and remained as such until the end of period.
