A hardy, evergreen plant native to Southern Europe, Rue grows best in a dry, sheltered position. Originally used to defend against witches and magic, it is now used as an insect repellent, or to relieve headaches and sciatica by bruising the fresh leaves and rubbing them against the skin. If used excessively, it is an acro-narcotic poison, and causes vomiting. It is well noted for its pungent smell.
