The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a fruit-bearing shrub or tree common throughout the Middle Ages. It symbolised birth and death because of its ability to bleed. A wounded unicorn was thought to bleed pomegranate seeds. The pomegranate tree's original native region stretches from Iran to the Himalayas in India.

The pomegranate was used as the personal emblem of Maximillian I.
