Currants are the fruits formerly known as "reisins de Corauntz" or "raisouns of coraunce". These are the small raisins that are now sold as "Zante currants". "Zante" was added to the name to distinguish them from certain species of the genus ribes, which in modern English are named after currants, because of a small and superficial similarity.
