The term Classical, in historial study, refers to ancient Greek or ancient Roman times. So a classical painting would reference the ideal proportions and stories from those times.

In more common usage, classical simply refers to something old, or something worthy of rememberance like Classic Rock, Classic Coke or a classic prank.
