Chausses are mail defences for the legs.
Chausses appear in the 11th century in a abbreviated form and were likely worn on just the front of the leg. They completely encircled the leg in the 12th century but become more prevalent in the13th century.
It is necessary to tie chausses below the knee in order to ensure knee movement is kept free.
