Battlemoor
Battlemoor is an annual week-long event hosted by the Kingdom of the Outlands, a regional branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). The event is held at the Sporleder Centennial Ranch near Aguilar, Colorado, and features historical reenactment activities including armored combat, fencing, archery, equestrian events, arts and sciences classes, and merchanting.
History
The first Battlemoor was held in 2009. Since its inception, the event has grown in scope and scale, offering a wide range of activities that celebrate medieval life, combat, and artistry. Over the years, Battlemoor has become a cornerstone event for the Kingdom of the Outlands, fostering camaraderie and historical recreation.
As of 2024, Battlemoor XII is scheduled to take place from July 3 to July 7 at the Sporleder Centennial Ranch near Aguilar, Colorado.
Activities
Martial Combat
Battlemoor hosts a variety of combat activities, including:
- Heavy Combat – Armored melee battles, tournaments, and large-scale engagements.
- Rapier Combat – Fencing competitions and duels using historical techniques.
- Archery – Target archery and combat archery events.
- Equestrian Activities – Mounted games and demonstrations of medieval riding skills.
Arts and Sciences
The event offers a range of classes and workshops covering historical crafts, skills, and research. Participants can learn period-appropriate techniques in areas such as fiber arts, metalworking, cooking, calligraphy, and bardic performance.
Merchanting
A marketplace featuring vendors from across the SCA provides attendees with access to period clothing, armor, weapons, jewelry, and other handcrafted goods. A special event, Moonlight Madness, encourages evening shopping under lantern light.
Youth Activities
Battlemoor includes dedicated programming for children and teenagers, with supervised activities designed to introduce them to medieval arts, combat, and culture.
Location and Site Features
Battlemoor is held at Sporleder Centennial Ranch, a private, family-owned property located in southeastern Colorado. The site offers space for camping, combat fields, and event infrastructure. Amenities include potable water, showers, and proximity to the town of Aguilar for supplies.
Participation and Organization
Battlemoor is organized by volunteers within the Kingdom of the Outlands. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the event’s operations, including setup, logistics, and event coordination.
