The term Arab was a generic term given to apply to a wide variety of peoples whose common ground appears to be primarily that they were located in and around, the Middle East and northern Africa. And that they were not Christian. The common mistake is to assume that an Arab is a Muslim and vice versa.

The word has a basis related to the desert in some languages.
