The life of minnesinger Hartmann voe Aue (c.1165-c.1215) is not attested to in any document except for some praise for his poetry by Gottfried von Strassburg in Tristan and a lamentation of his death by Heinrich von den Turen in Diu Crone. From his own works it is guessed that Hartmann travelled on the Third Crusade.

He had two epics, Eric and Iwein. His other longer works are Buchlein (a debate on love), Gregorius and Der Arme Heinrich. His poems are marked by a high level of technical skill.
