Closed-cell foam is a modern material in common use in the SCA, usually in the construction of armour and weapons. Of the many kinds of closed-cell foam, polyethylene is most commonly used, especially as padding; the thin blue sleeping pads made for camping are often cut up and used to pad the insides of SCA helmets, for example.

Thrusting tips are usually made of this material, and axeheads or the ends of polearms are increasingly being made of stiffer, denser varieties of foam.
