Angouleme, a major town in western central France, was seized in 507 by the Franks, dispossessing the Visigoths.
From the 9th century it was the capital of the counts of Angouleme.
When John of England married Isabel of Angouleme in 1200, it became an English posession and during the Hundred Years War it was the subject of repeated conflicts between the French and the English invaders.
