Medieval is used for things relating or belonging to the Middle Ages, which is the period in European history between antiquity and the Renaissance. The beginning is usually dated from the fall of Rome, C.E. 476. The end is fuzzier, with dates variously given anywhere between 1250 and 1500. A good compromise end-date, often used by art historians, is 1400 C.E.
The medieval period is often subdivided into three sub-eras, given here with oft-sited time frames.
- Early medieval - approx 400 to 1000 CE
- High medieval - approx 1000 to 1300 CE
- Late medieval - approx 1300 to 1500 CE
