Westminster

When the Roman city of London was abandoned, there was already a Christian church there (which would later, under the early Christian kings of Essex, become the Minster, or cathedral, of St.Paul). Thus when English kings established themselves on land beside an abbey further westwards up the river Thames, this became known as the "West Minster", by contrast, and the name transferred over to the palace which they built there, on the river's banks.
