The life of minnesinger Hartmann voe Aue (c.1165-c.1215) is not attested to in any document except for some praise for his poetry by Gottfried von Strassburg in Tristan and a lamentation of his death by Heinrich von den Turen in Diu Crone. From his own works it is guessed that Hartmann travelled on the crusade of 1189/90.

He had two epics, Eric and Iwein. His other longer works are Buchlein (a debate on love), Gregorius and Der Arme Heinrich. His poems are marked by a high level of technical skill.
