A priest is an occupation that involved the collection of church taxes, performing a masses for the leity and distribution of alms for the poor. The positions assumes a belief in the Christian God(s). The priest would also be expected to notify people of messages from both secular and Church authorities.

Only priests could adminsister the sacraments and they were exempt from secular law. The latter played a significant factor in the death of Thomas Becket.

Priests were subservient to bishops.
