Macbeth is a play by William Shakespeare, very loosely based on the reign of Macbeth I of Scotland, who ruled Scotland from 1040 to 1057.
In the play, Macbeth changes from a loyal vassal of the previous king to a murderous tyrant - the real life 11th century Macbeth was not such a horrible person.
