The bolt or quarrel is a short rod similar in appearance to an arrow and designed to be shot from a crossbow.

They might be fletched with two flights that might be made of feathers, leather, parchment or wood. The heads were frequently of the bodkin type with sockets starting at about 14mm across. The shafts were shorter than arrows being around 12 to 15 inches long.
