Gloves were used in the middle ages for a variety of purposes. Technically gloves usually have separate sections for each finger, with gloves that have but one section for all the fingers and another for the thumb known as mittens.

  • clothing accessory - made of a variety of materials and sometimes decorated with gemstones, embroidery etc... or more humble versions that take the form of split mittens lined with sheepskin.
  • occupational clothing
    • archers
    • falconers - used to protect the falconer's hand from the claws and beak of the bird whilst "holding" it. It is described as having "a bird on the glove".
    • soldiers
