A chain is a series of metal rings interwoven with each other to create a long string of considerable strength.
Chainmaille is an incorrect, out-of-period term for maille.
Chains in the SCA
Small chains of precious metals are often worn for decoration. In the SCA, a large "gold" chain (often brass for economy) is worn by knights as a sign of fealty.
