The Non Member Surcharge or NMS is an additional charge (currently $3 US) for attendance at SCA events in some kingdoms. It is added to the site fee for the event and is paid only by those who are not card-carrying members of the SCA. The funds from the NMS go directly to the USA SCA corporate office. Such a charge is the subject of some strong feelings both pro and con. It is an outgrowth of the "pay to play" issue that arose in the early 90s.
