Aethelbald was born some time around the year 834 to Aethelwulf and his first wife, Osburga. He helped lead his father's forces to victory at Acleah in 851. His life took an Oedipal turn in 856 when he deposed his father and in 858, after his father had died, married his own widowed mother in law (who was aged 14). This marriage was later annulled due to consanguinity. He died in 860, to be succeeded by his brother, Aethelbert.
His mother-in-law/wife, Judith, daughter of the Frankish king Charles the Bald, subsequently eloped with the Count of Flanders, Baldwin, married him (with papal help), and gave him a son (also Baldwin) who succeeded his father.
