Paleography is the study of writing forms. It can distinguish the writing styles of different scribes and the place and time where the scribe was taught to write. It can tell us if a hand was formal or informal, hurried or deliberate. Thus paleography can provide us a lot of information about medieval manuscripts from only the style of writing used in them, for example in paleographic dating.
