When Cunnan users say the society they are refering to The Society for Creative Anachronism which is often abbrieviated to SCA because the name in its entireity is too much of a mouthful.

It is, perhaps, worth remembering, however, that members of other recreation groups (and, indeed, mundane groups) may also use the same convenient tag (for example the English Far Isles Medieval Society call themselves "the Society" among themselves).
